Layer Editing Basics

What Are Layers?

Layers are like transparent sheets stacked on top of each other. Each layer can hold different content — a photo, painted strokes, text, or effects. You can edit one layer without affecting others, which gives you non-destructive creative control.

Creating and Managing Layers

Click the "+" button in the layer panel to add a new empty layer. Drag layers to reorder them. Right-click a layer for options like duplicate, merge down, or flatten. Each layer shows a live thumbnail preview of its content.

Opacity and Visibility

Use the opacity slider in the layer panel to make a layer semi-transparent. Click the eye icon to temporarily hide a layer. These controls are essential for compositing multiple images together and creating subtle blending effects.

Importing Images as Layers

When you already have a document open, dragging and dropping a new image onto the canvas adds it as a new layer automatically. This makes it easy to composite multiple photos. Use the move and transform tools to position and resize imported layers.
